These are the dates of Gus’ two open-heart surgeries.

Two days we'll never forget.

We’re happy to report Gus is still thriving. He’s active and energetic and curious about his “Superhero Heart!”

At this year’s check-up he went from holding totally still for his echo to exploring every inch of the exam room and demonstrating his proficiency in climbing (and jumping) without help!

Still, each time we take him to any doctor’s appointment, we keep our fingers crossed that we’ll hear good news. We’re also aware every day that Gus may face many of the other challenges of people living with CHD’s.

The facts are clear:

Congenital Heart Disease (CHD) is the #1 birth defect and approximately 1 in 110 babies are born with CHD.
CHD kills 2x more children each year than all forms of childhood cancer combined.
1 in every 10 children diagnosed with CHD does not live into adulthood.
CHD is a lifelong condition; surgery is not a cure.

Despite its prevalence, CHDs are viewed as a hidden disease and often escape public awareness.

Thanks to advances in care, for the first time, there are more adults living with CHD than children, but research for CHD is vastly underfunded and as more people are living longer, there is a growing need for additional support as they transition to adulthood.

People living with CHDs continue to face issues with growth and eating, developmental delays, mood and anxiety disorders, difficulty with exercise, heart rhythm problems, heart failure, sudden cardiac arrest or stroke.

We’re asking you to join TEAM GUS in the fight against Congenital Heart Disease as we participate in The Cincinnati Congenital Heart Walk, September 9th, 2023.
