In January 2024, our son Saint was born with two birth defects, neither of which were discovered until after his birth. One of those conditions was congenital heart disease (CHD), a structural problem affecting the way his heart functions.
For Saint, the left side of his heart was impacted. He was diagnosed with coarctation of the aorta, a serious condition in which the main artery (the aorta) is narrowed, making it difficult for blood to flow properly from the heart to the rest of the body.
Just before he turned two weeks old, Saint underwent open-heart surgery to repair the defect. It was an incredibly difficult time for our family, but thanks to the expertise of his medical team and Saint’s own remarkable strength, he made a full recovery. Today, he continues to amaze us every day by living his best life joyfully and courageously.
Our journey with CHD has given us a deep appreciation for the life-saving research that makes stories like Saint’s possible. We are profoundly grateful, yet we recognize that there is still so much work to be done.
By raising awareness and supporting continued CHD research, we hope to help give other children and families the same chance at a healthy, happy future that Saint was given.
