My Story

I’ve experienced heart palpitations where my heart would race at 290 beats per minute under load. This occurred during a test, a grueling swim, or playing pickup basketball with friends. In those moments, my vision blurs, every muscle in my body weakens, and my heart feels like it’s about to burst. These episodes were the impetus to my cardiac journey, one that was life-changing.

During my cardiologist’s appointment in early August 2023, I anticipated a straightforward check-up. As the technician conducted an echocardiogram, I thought of the upcoming swim season and the strides I planned to take. Instead of the expected all-clear, I was presented with a diagram of my coronary artery. As the doctor explained the necessity of an impending open-heart surgery, the gravity of the situation hit me. All thoughts of my swimming aspirations dissipated as my heart sank.

Congenital heart defects, the most prevalent birth defect, disrupt the crucial flow of blood and oxygen which places immense strain on the heart. In 2010, it is estimated that 2.4 million individuals live with a congenital heart defect. Most of them are unaware, living asymptomatic until an adverse event occurs. Additionally, compared to the general population, individuals with a congenital heart defect have 3-4 times higher rates of going to the Emergency Room. Fortunately, we can help take vital steps to mitigate these substantial health risks.

This startling reality underscores the urgent need for increased awareness and advanced screenings. After my diagnosis and surgery, I realized how crucial early detection is. Identifying defects early can prevent sudden, life-threatening events and provide timely interventions. Supporting organizations dedicated to congenital heart defect research and education helps save countless lives and improve the quality of life for affected individuals nationwide.

My personal experience with a congenital heart defect has inspired me to support The Children’s Heart Foundation, an organization dedicated to finding promising treatment for the millions navigating through the hardships of a congenital heart defect. By supporting this cause, we can aid in advancing research, improving treatment, and ultimately saving lives. Together, our contributions can make a difference, offering hope and better futures for those affected by congenital heart defects.

Please join me in supporting the Children’s Heart Foundation. Your donation can make a difference in the lives of children across the country. With our combined efforts, we can instill hope and prevent tragic outcomes.

On June 28th, to raise awareness and funding for this cause, I’ll be swimming from Alcatraz to San Francisco.
