Bentlee has a congenital heart defect that my niece and his mother explains the best:
Congenital Heart Defects have majorly impacted my family! Our son Bentlee was born with Dextro-Transposition of the Great Arteries, & Atrial Septal Defect at birth. His defects were not caught while in utero. DTGA is when the two major arteries are crisscrossed which alters blood flow to the correct areas. The coronary arteries are also affected. ASD is a hole between the atriums in the heart.
Once Bentlee's defects were found, he was rushed to St. Louis Childrens Hospital where he had a procedure the night he was born to buy him a few days to get stronger.
At 5 days old, he was taken back for a 10 & 1/2 hour open heart surgery. During this surgery, he had some complications, but was able to pull through! Bentlee got to come home after being inpatient the first 3 weeks of his life!!
We are blessed to report Bentlee is doing so well! We know wholeheartedly that without advancements in CHD research (& our Heavenly Father), Bentlee would not be here. We also know that advancements must continue to take place for all other children who will unfortunately be diagnosed in the future with the #1 birth defect in the world. CHD is lifelong. There is NO cure. These operations can only mend the heart anatomically.
Our family finds so much joy in giving back to funding for CHD research. We are honored to share Bentlee's story with the world & raise awareness for Congenital heart defects/disease.
